Bob McCurdy - Trumpet, Flugelhorn
Bob began his professional career at 16 playing with big bands and other groups in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and performed in Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago in jazz, rock, classical, and studio situations. Artists McCurdy performed with included The Temptations, Natalie Cole, Bob Hope, Tony Orlando, The Platters, Joan Rivers, Red Skelton, Bob Newhart, Steve Allen, Johnny Cash, Tom Wopat , Richard Davis, Jimmy and Jeanie Cheatham, Steve Houghton, and many others. After receiving a Master's degree from UW-Madison he taught at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin. In 1982 he became the Director of Jazz Studies and Trumpet Professor at the Lionel Hampton School of Music---University of Idaho and taught there for 24 years. While in this position he performed with Lionel Hampton, Diane Reeves, Claudio Roditi, Slide Hampton, Wallace Roney, Randy Brecker, Chuck Findley, Ed Soph, Bill Perkins, Bobby Shew, Paquito D'Rivera, Elvin Jones, Rob McConnell, Igor Butman, Terrall Stafford, Benny Green, John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton, Russell Malone, Bill Watrous, and others. He has recorded two CD’s with ”Crosscurrent” (contemporary jazz quintet) and another with the Spokane Jazz Orchestra as lead trumpet. While in Kansas he has performed with the Topeka Jazz Workshop, Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, Boulevard Big Band, 9 + 1, and the New Vintage Big Band. He currently teaches Jazz Studies at Emporia State University, Trumpet at Bethel College, Newton, Kansas, and remains active as a guest artist, clinician, free-lance trumpet player, and adjudicator. |
